The last one to do so was George Wallace.

He ran for President in 1972 and was ahead and favored to win the Democratic Party’s Presidential nomination.

Instead, Wallace was shot and paralyzed from the waist down on May 15th, 1972, during a campaign stop in Laurel, Maryland.

It ended his campaign.

The gunman, Arthur Bremer, was found guilty of shooting Wallace.

On May 16th, 2025, Bremer was released from prison.
